Each lab is outfitted with a class set of microscopes and triple-beam balances. Our labs include DNA extraction, running gel electrophoresis, DNA fingerprinting and barcoding. ESC’s biotechnology lab provides students and their teachers the opportunity to work with professional, high-grade equipment. Students and their teachers can participate in a variety of classes that include observation and interaction with these animals and many more mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, insects and marine life. Fauna is home to over 100 Bess Beetles, Hermit Crabs and Fire-belly Toads. The greenhouse is an active lab for botany instruction including numerous Hydroponic and Aquaponic systems. Flora also serves as a learning lab for our Hydroponics, Pondaponics and Aquaculture classes. Flora has four grow labs that provide ESC with a steady supply of plants to study. ESC programs are age and grade appropriate, aligned to the NYC Science Scope and Sequence and the Common Core Learning Standards.ĮSC has two unique learning labs dedicated specifically for plant (flora) and animal (fauna) investigations and research. ESC engages students and teachers in experiences that challenge them to think critically about real-world contexts and issues from which STEM concepts and skills can be learned. Through targeted standards-based enrichment programs, ESC’s highly trained staff encourage students to explore the urban habitats around them and become stewards for the environment. A list of services, laboratory protocols, and pricing can be obtained upon request. As a premier informal science destination space, ESC’s mission is to deliver hands on environmental science an d ST EM instruction. Standard EPA procedures are followed, and data quality control practices are implemented where possible. Because we are a nonprofit organization, our fees are significantly lower than normal commercial pricing. We also provide a range of analytical services to the public. We especially welcome collaborative ideas and encourage developing joint proposals to seek external funding to make the center more sustainable. The center is open to all faculty members, researchers, and students at Brooklyn College and other City University of New York campuses for their research and teaching activities. The XRD is currently primarily used for the identification and quantification of mineral phases (e.g., asbestos), metal oxides in natural or synthetic materials, and rocking curve measurements. The multipurpose TEM can be used for high-resolution image observation, versatile analysis by convergent-beam electron diffraction, and analysis of the atomic structure and/or binding sites of atoms. For toxic metals, such as arsenic, mercury, chromium, and selenium, speciation capability is also available. The instrument provides parts per billion (ppb) to parts per trillion (ppt) detection limits for most elements. The low-blank trace metal lab processes all types of samples into aqueous solution that ICP-MS can analyze. AP Exam scores are reported on a 5-point scale that indicates how qualified students are to receive college credit and placement: AP Exam scores of 5 are equivalent to grades of A+ and A in the corresponding college course. Pathway Study Center had the opportunity to empower aproximately 40 youngsters with language based learning differences by means of an education. ![]() ![]() Brooklyn The Pathway Study Center EIN 46-3288600. The ICP-MS can rapidly analyze most elements in the periodic table in many different environmental, geological and biological matrices. The AP Exam score is a weighted combination of scores on the multiple-choice section and the free-response section. Environmental grants Animal shelter grants All.The facilities at ESAC can provide structural and compositional information for a wide range of samples, especially at very high resolutions (nanometer scale) or ultra-low elemental concentrations (parts per trillion ranges). An environmental geochemistry laboratory is available for both research and teaching activities. Core facilities include a Perkin-Elmer Dynamic Reaction Cell Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), an Analytical JEOL 200-kV Transmitted Electron Microscope (TEM), and a Philips Multi-Purpose X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD). The Environmental Science Analytical Center (ESAC), located on the fifth floor of Ingersoll Hall, is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for environmental research and education, and provides analytical services to a wide range of customers.
